There is an illusion that there is objectivity. Nonsense, rubbish, utter crap! There are certainly varying degrees of objectivity depending on an individuals ability to see things ‘clearly,’ but then, isn’t that by definition subjectivity. Pure objectivity just doesn’t exist.

When you bring in a consultant from the outside to look at things differently, you are not buying their pure objectivity, just a little more than you and your crew have. That’s why consultants often get accused of giving different advice, that’s because its based on experience, values and competence not objectivity.

So when you are designing that new customer experience, a new product or creating a piece of design work, what do you do if you are trying to manage peoples subjectivity? Well you can’t please all of the people all of the time. Perception, is perhaps, the only reality and how the hell do you manage that?

It’s about raising the standards so high, you eliminate the potential destroying factors that your customers may percieve. You have to think of everything, get down to the smallest detail, become obsessed with seeing it from the customers perspective. And, its easier to do if you involve them in the process, gain feedback during the development phase. Ask them what if? How could we? What would blow your minds?

The only limitations on this are the limits you put on it yourself. Stop thinking that your customers are objective. They are not, their motivation is based on perception. In an attempt to manage subjectivity, involve those who are subjective.
